The National Agency for Information and Communication Technologies (ANTIC) has held a meeting in Cameroon to discuss on cybersecurity in Cameroon with the participation of the Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation (CTO). The main objective of this meeting was to lay a strategy for the fight against cybercrime in the country. <<We can not build a digital economy without cyber security in Cameroon>> says Shola Taylor the secretary general of the CTO. Cameroon is actually engaged in a process of developing the digital economy. Sadly in a like manner, there’s an increase in cybercriminality in Cameroon. This increase in cybercriminality is manifested in different practices such as Skimming that consists of hacking magnetic cards using special devices inserted into ATMs (automated teller machines) ; fraud Sim Box, which can divert phone calls from abroad. In addition to that, more than 80% of the softwares used in Cameroon are pirated ones. We also learn from the magazine Business in Cameroon that skimming has lead to a total loss of up to 3 billion fcfa to the banks in Cameroon in 2015. However it is fraud by SIM box that has brought much more loss to the economy of the country with a total loss of 18 billion to the telecom operators and 4 billion to the government.
