The Nintendo Switch had been announced on October 2016. It had been presented on the 12th January 2017. All the fans as well as the most curious attended the events organised by Nintendo in different parts of the world allowing them to have their hands on the most awaited gaming console of 2016, thereby clearing all doubts on Nintendo's next gen console.
According to different testers, this console wasn’t what they expected and they were somehow deceived by it. However we can’t say it was a failure and we’ll have to wait for it official release on the 3rd of March 2017.
Specifications
Display
This was a surprise to many including me. Why choosing an HD display ? Maybe to make it easy on the battery, SoC ? Actually we have many android tablets that are been sold at the same price with a Full HD display. Nintendo hasn’t communicated anything about this choice. At least the device has an HDMI port whose output is able to come out in Full HD if you’ll like to connect it to a TV.
Memory
The device comes with 32GB internal memory that’ll be extendable with a microSDXC card. Up to how many ? No information on that. However that memory will mainly be use for storing your music, pictures and so on. You'll have to buy classical cartridges as before like on the DS. No need to say theses games are gonna occupy a limited amount of space on the device. However buying a memory card will still be advisable.
Connectors
The gaming console has a USB Type-C port to recharge the handles. There's also a USB connector on the working station but it is a Type-A with a 2.0 Standard to which we’ll be able to connect an Ethernet cable and an external hard disk with a max capacity of 2TB. Also, the console can connect to a WiFi network but we don’t know anything on the WiFi standard that is concerned.
Autonomy
Nintendo hasn’t communicated anything on it autonomy. The only thing we know is that it can last 2 to 6 hours of usage. However this will depend on many factors like the CPU and GPU consumption, the luminosity of the display connected accessories and so on. We can already predict that the CPU won’t be easy on the battery. Indeed if it embarks a Tegra X1, that is inscribed in 20nm then the energy consumption will be high. However comparing the weight of the device (about 300g according to some sources) and that of the NVIDIA Shield Tablet, (390g) and taking into consideration they almost have the same specs, then we can conclude that the battery of the Switch maybe the same as that of the Shield Tablet, 5200mAh battery.
Mechanisms
The console has a touch screen but that is not the main mechanism. The main one is those pair of detachable handles fixed on both sides of the device. Nintendo calls them the Joy-Cons. They’ve been developed to function together, but can also function as distinct handles (like does on the SNES).
The right Joy-Con has an NFC (Near Field Communication) card for matching the amiibo. Both also have infrared cameras with motion detection enabling them to be used as Wiimotes. They also embark an accelerometer and a gyroscope. Software
The software here is just the classical Nintendo's that has been retouch for the Switch ? However no big thing here. As for communication, it is been said we’ll be able to communicate in game with friends via a dedicated mobile app for which we’ll have to pay. (Nintendo again reinforcing it position in the mobile world). You’ll also have to pay for exclusive deals, free monthly access to SNES and NES games collection (like what is been done on the PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live) as well as to be able to play online.
Games
Many people complain that not many games will be available on the Switch. Somehow I’m not okay with that. At least 22 games have already been announced for the Switch in which 7 will be release in March and 3 will be launched with the switch (Zelda : Breath of the Wild, Skylanders : Imanginators, Just Dance 2017 and Super BomberMan).
The console will be available on the 3rd of March. In Cameroon we can expect it a couple of weeks after it release in Europe. It’ll be available in the Fnac store that is going to open very soon in March in Douala at Kadji Square.
Now the question is is it worth the buy ? Especially knowing that the Playstation Pro and the Xbox ONE S are sold at the same price and even cheaper in some retailers ? I find the console interesting but let's wait for the official tests.
