Google has announced on it developper blog the release of a new algorithm for it Playstore that will reduce the download size of apps when updating them This algorithm is know as bsdiff. This is just an addition to it delta algorithms. Google has been using delta algorithms since 2012. With these delta agorithms, only changes (delta) to APK files (apps) are downloaded and will be merged with the existing files thus reducing the download size. In this case, bsdiff will reduce the delta size by up to 50% or more. For axample Chrome's major update M46 to M47 will be reduced from 22.8MB to 12.9MB. Same goes for minor updates M47 that is reduced from 15.2MB to 3.6MB. They also say that when updating an app from the Playstore, only the update size (the delta size) will be displayed and not the app's size in the app's information. As for now, we still don't know when this new algorithm will be rolled out but we can expect it very soon. I do'nt know for you but i'm very happy that Google had finally decided to let us only download the changes made to an app when updating it. This will now allow me to update bunch of app when i'm on mobile data.
